Moonta Mining Heritage
- Category:Tours & Experiences
- Location:Moonta, SA
When next in South Australia take time to visit the National Trust SA Tourist Information Office at Moonta to enquire about the famous Cornish Copper Mining Heritage of this unique area. It would be an interesting and informative few days.
An Award Winning Tourist Train travels around old mine workings through tunnels, and past mine shafts, old pump houses and huge tailing heaps and includes a commentary which gives an overview of the history of the whole area. On returning a quick trip to the popular Lolly shop supplies cool drinks! Those with a thirst for knowledge can visit the nearby Museum where several hours can disappear quickly enjoying the historic displays. The Miner's Cottage with rooms filled with items from grandmother's time and the relaxing olde worlde garden are also worthwhile.
Everyone finds something of interest in the wonders of the Underground Mine Tour at Wheal Hughes, a recent tourist award medallist. The fun of donning hard hats and lamps and wearing boots just like a real miner appeals to all ages, and then exploring the large colourful cathedral-like caverns with an experienced guide is "awesome" - to quote a frequently used comment in the visitors book. Bookings are essential.
The Tourist Office has an array of quality souvenirs, and pamphlets are available for those wishing to do the Walking Trails. Books on the history of Moonta with stories of some of its characters are also available.
If you wish to trace your family history the Local History & Resource Centre in the Old School of Mines may be able to help you.
So you can see Moonta is definitely worth a visit! Don't miss it!
